Handpainted and researched map of the Near East following the First Crusade circa 1135. The first - and most successful - of the Crusades transformed the region. The Byzantine Empire has expanded at the expense of the Sultanate of Rûm, Armenian Cilicia has maintained independence but will shortly be conquered by the Greeks. The County of Edessa, County of Tripoli, Principality of Antioch, and Kingdom of Jerusalem have been established but are in a precarious situation, surrounded by the Muslims (Fatimids and Seljuks) and each other. I tried to stay as accurate to contemporary scripts as possible, so Greek speakers will notice, for example, some differences compared with modern Greek. The poem is a section of a troubadour poem concerning the Crusades ("Quan lo rossinhol el follos").

High-quality giclee print available at various sizes. The actual detail is greater than in the photos, which have been compressed.

Unfortunately, I do not typically sell my prints with the frames but if that is something you are interested in, please contact me directly. Additionally, if you are interested in the original rather than a print, please contact me directly.
