Handpainted and researched map of South Asia in various calligraphic scripts. It is 1763, the Mughal Empire has been in sharp decline but still retains Nawabs in Sindh, Bahawalpur, Oudh, and Rohilkhand. Nominally, the Nizam of Hyderabad in the Deccan is subservient to the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, but in practice is independent and even dominates over the Nawabs of Arcot. The Maratha Empire or Maratha Confederacy, a Hindu power, has wrestled control over much of the continent from the Mughals. In the North, the Sikh Confederacy (Misl) is soon to form the Sikh Empire (1799) and the Malla Dynasty of Nepal - currently divided in three kingdoms - will unite under the Ghorka Kingdom in 1768 to form the Kingdom of Nepal. In the South, the Kingdom of Mysore is reaching its zenith, having recently conquered the Nayakas of Bednore and Dindigul.

At this point, European traders had been present for centuries - the Portuguese arrived first only to be superseded by the Dutch, French, and English. 1763 marked the end of the Carnatic wars between the British and French as well as the end of the Seven Years’ War. Both conflicts resulted in Britain becoming the dominant European power in South Asia (though its territory represented is exaggerated, it wasn't until 1775 that all of Bengal would be British). The French are mostly restricted to Pondichéry. In 1757, the British under Robert Clive win the defection of Mir Jafar and consequently win a key victory at the Battle of Plassey. The result is the annexation of Bengal to the British East India Company and the rise of the British Raj.

High-quality giclee print available at various sizes. The actual detail is greater than in the photos, which have been compressed.

Unfortunately, I do not typically sell my prints with the frames but if that is something you are interested in, please contact me directly. Additionally, if you are interested in the original rather than a print, please contact me directly.
