Hand-painted and researched map of Kievan Rus around the year 1200. The map is written Old East Slavic language and Old Church Slavonic, based on the orthography of the Primary Chronicle. The title is in the vyaz calligraphic style. Part of the Primary Chronicle is replicated at the bottom of the map telling the story of Vladimir the Great of the Rurik dynasty's adoption of (Greek) Christianity. The borders represent estimates of the medieval Russian and Ukrainian principalities. At the top left is Saint George modeled off old Slavic icons, and at the top right is an image based on the Dormitian Cathedral in Vladimir.
High-quality giclee print available at various sizes. The actual detail is greater than in the photos, which have been compressed. This piece took roughly four weeks to research, draft, and paint.
